Organizing working-class renters across Western New York usually just happens directly from my desk out in Tonawanda. Recognizing the reality of my own physical capacity means I don't actually stand on porches in the rain to build structural leverage. I build localized beachheads in places like the Masten and Ellicott districts using video chats and text messages instead. Massive corporate portfolios operate with near-total impunity because they bank on the isolation of individual tenants to prevent any coordinated pushback so we refuse to play along with that extractive game. And putting Intersectional Pacifist Social Anarchism (IPSA) into practice means we teach neighbors how to build defensive infrastructure instead of waiting for municipal politicians to suddenly care. Through The Rising Tide Fellowship we educate the community on a cooperative strategy we call The Squeeze where people learn to legally set up pocket escrows. You literally just withhold your rent in a separate savings account and don't touch it until critical repairs get finished. Hitting an absentee property owner right in their balance sheet shifts the power dynamic directly back to the block. Total daily grind. But lasting transformation requires serious patience. Grassroots labor involves having those slow difficult conversations with neighbors over an app to break down the barriers that keep everyone vulnerable to exploitation. We just keep stacking those bricks. A rising tide lifts all boats when we invest directly in each other. Let's build something beautiful. My name is Edward Todd Harris III and my daily focus centers on building alternative economic structures right here in Western New York. Waiting around for absentee property managers to suddenly care about the living conditions in places like the Masten District just drains your energy. So we decided to stop waiting. Building a genuine solidarity economy means organizing neighbors to pool their resources and protect each other instead. Look the reality is that real counter-institutions require actual education. You can't just tell folks to fight corporate landlords without giving them the tools to do it safely. Through The Rising Tide Fellowship we run community strategy sessions where we break down exactly how to force structural repairs without getting caught in an eviction trap. We study things like the tenant organizing blueprints coming out of Rochester to figure out how to replicate those wins locally. No gurus and no lectures. Just neighbors sharing knowledge. And practicing Intersectional Pacifist Social Anarchism (IPSA) means we have to build the equitable society we want to see right now in the dirt. Shifting the power dynamic directly back into the hands of the community takes relentless consistency. A total daily grind. Let's build something beautiful. The housing crisis is not a glitch. Fighting it takes a network. Here are the organizations building tenant power in Buffalo.

When facing eviction, code violations, or landlord harassment, the current system relies heavily on tenants feeling isolated. Property owners frequently bank on the fact that an individual renter might lack the resources or the knowledge to fight back alone. A highly effective way to counter that isolation is through organized, cross-community solidarity.
The Rising Tide Fellowship operates within a broader ecosystem of groups working to build working-class power in Western New York. Building a functional defense network means connecting legal aid, mutual aid, and direct action into a cohesive front.
Our digital headquarters serves as a directory to connect you directly with these mission-aligned organizations. While we do not maintain formal or official corporate partnerships with these entities, we consider them vital allies bound by a shared commitment to community sovereignty.
This directory includes legal resources like Neighborhood Legal Services, the Western New York Law Center, and HOME. It also links to on-the-ground organizing groups like the Queen City Workers Center, PUSH Buffalo, and Black Love Resists in the Rust (which is currently sunsetting its operations and not taking on new missions, but remains a highly respected part of our local organizing history).
