I've been spending a lot of time thinking about #ChatGPT and academic assessment and why I am not so concerned about it (at the college level). It's not that ChatGPT is bad for education. It's that our education system is built upon a basis wherein we do assessment wrong.
What @hoffman@hci.social writes in his blog below comes close to how I think of things (thanks for saving me a lot of time writing my thoughts down!)

John Oliver's piece on ChatGPT is so good
Shout out to all the people in my neighborhood that put out 15-foot skeletons for their yards this Halloween. I too am a fan of the Ninth House. May the Locked Tomb remain shut forever. May the rock never be rolled away. #GideonTheNinth
Well, I've finally done it. I've traveled to another continent to give an invited talk and forgot to book my hotel.
It was only a matter of time.
Bari Italy seems nice
No one asked but...
Bari, Italy is a neat little city. It would be 1000% times better if they made it more walker and bike friendly. It's side-walks are so skinny, all for the sake of cars.
And for gods-sake get rid of all the motorcycles. It's a small city, you can get by with an ebike.
Sincerely, the person who got woken up multiple times at night by noisy-ass motorcycles.
Publisher, Tor, comes under fire for using AI generated art for the cover of an upcoming novel.
The cover designer paid shutterstock for a piece of art that was later determined to be AI generated. This image was then significantly edited (including correcting for AI generation mistakes like a person with a missing leg)
Starting to pay attention to the WGA strike. One of many concerns is AI. It goes something like this:
1. AI won't replace writers.
2. AI will give producers an excuse to re-categorize writers as "rewriters". Script rewriters is a real job that pays substantially less than script writing.
3. One possible outcome is that producers use LLMs to "write" a first draft, and then hire rewriters.
4. This will likely produce the same amount of work (or more) but for less pay.

We made a spiderweb tunnel outside our house.
We didn’t actually expect to catch a kid
What do we do with it?
Look who's here on sigmoid.social! @laramar@sigmoid.social and @rajammanabrolu@sigmoid.social!
Lara Martin and Raj Ammanabrolu will both be on the job market (separately).
❖ Lara works has the prestigious CI Fellowship and is a postdoc at UPenn and works on neuro-symbolic AI for story generation and interactive storytelling.
❖ Raj is a postdoc at AI2 and works on NLP and reinforcement learning. He has SOTA on interactive text world environments.
You should definitely give them jobs.
AI-generated high-five!
.@laramar@sigmoid.social continues to rock when it comes to LMs and D&D https://www.theregister.com/2023/08/19/chatgpt_dnd_dm/
Look at this charming little lamp @rajammanabrolu@sigmoid.social found while at EMNLP in Abu Dabai. It goes perfectly with the AI generated story I used as a running example in my dissertation work (journal version here: https://arxiv.org/abs/1401.3841)
Hey faculty hiring committees! Are @rajammanabrolu@sigmoid.social and @laramar@sigmoid.social on your short lists?
