RE: @emilymbender@dair-community.social

"Your mom's so fake she requires an entire data centre" 😆 I do enjoy the childish AI taunt pick-me-ups between the fresh AI hell despair manifestations in this episode. 🥲

Been reorganising and partly rewriting the low level SD card SPI code for the W65C265SXB. Couldn't get anything to work reliably. Weird noise on the MISO line, not the clean idle state, but still some kind of response to the initialisation sequence.

Checking for dodgy jumper wire connections, trying out old revisions of the code, etc.

Then finally realised that I had not turned on the power supply output to the SD card, so whatever it was doing was off whatever current it was leeching off the signal lines, through internal paths.

I think I'll go to bed now.

Activating the 3D board preview in KiCad is by far the fastest way to log out of my workstation PC, currently.

Display server dies instantly, no questions asked.

Enjoyed the long stretch without problems like this, but I guess I will have to turn off the hardware accelleration again. 😐

Supporting immediate mode for the BIT instruction is a nice addition to the 65816, but ... it only sets the Z flag, unlike all the other modes which set N and V as well?! What a kludge. 😬

@bjonte@oldbytes.space Besides being oddly inconsistent (addressing modes don't affect flag effects, come on!), it must somehow sidestep the regular ALU path. Seems like it ought to be more work to not behave like everything else does. 🤷‍♂️

@bjonte@oldbytes.space I understand it gives good flexibility to jump in and out of 8/16 bits modes as needed, while maintaining tight code density. But it *is* pretty annoying, also when writing code. Either you need to defensively set modes in code, or carefully document (and adhere to) assumptions for each routine. And constantly having to give the assembler cues as well, as it cannot be trusted (nor expected, really) to keep track of what's going on. And while the states can be pushed and popped at runtime in the CPU, ca65, which I use, can only set the states to explicit values. Other assemblers may be better in this respect...

@bjonte@oldbytes.space Next annoyance: whether a routine can be called as near (16 bit) or far (24 bit) is baked into the choice of return instruction in the routine (RTS vs RTL). 😭
