A majority of KDE developers are determined to create an LLM policy that allows AI code submissions without any form of disclosure to “avoid shaming”, and appear to be completely dismissing any ethical, environmental, or copyright concerns brought up.

Interesting how Deltachat and Jabber, both decentralized encrypted messaging apps (as opposed to Signal, which is centralized), don’t even require an email to create an account, let alone a phone number or payment.

Yes, they removed it from being viewed from the public due to the PR backlash it was generating. You can still read it on an archive site.

Solus is mostly has just a skeleton crew left after the created, Ikey Doherty, left it suddenly, I personally didn’t think it’d be around long-term even before this new policy.

bee_fumo and Svin share the same avatar, and Svin’s response saying they know who in that thread like their X posts, and they later edited that post to this: They later updated their post to this (which is still viewable/hasn’t been removed: And further down responded with this: Pretty solid evidence they are the same person.

Just a heads up that the SimpleX founder, Evgeny Poberezkin, unfortunately has ties to right-wing groups. Evgeny is a supporter of the far-right populist Reform UK party, and the Donald Trump administration. In 2024, he donated to the Reform UK party on behalf of SimpleX chat and boosted Tommy Robinson, a far-right, anti-Islam activist and convicted violent criminal, and his support of violent far-right riots in the UK.[ On X, Evgeny frequently boosts far-right politicians, COVID-19 conspiracy theories, climate change denial, and transphobic and otherwise bigoted rhetoric. SimpleX has received a $1M donation from Jack Dorsey[source] in the wake of changes to Telegram that promised to crack down on far-right extremism on the app. Also @sonalder@lemmy.ml

DeltaChat is cool but it lacks forward secrecy for now and the foreseeable future That may or may not be an issue depending on the threat model of the individual. Someone that suspects a state actor may be surveilling them? They’d need something heavier. For someone just wanting a group chat with friends/family that they don’t want being used for AI training or sold to ad companies to build a profile on them? Deltachat is more than secure enough, and certainly better than discord or whatsapp. and XMPP is a newbie-excluding mess (for example, encrypted group chats require every user to authenticate every other user) I haven’t needed to authenticate anything manually in my experience in the XMPP apps I’ve used. I just enable OMEMO encryption in the chat I’m in, and as long as the other participants also have that option enabled, it usually just works, and they can read my messages.

I agree that XMPP has some UX problems that some clients have yet to solve, and that is one area where Deltachat is very much ahead. If you tell people “on Android you should use this app, on iOS use that app” - you lose regular people fast. If you have a feature that only exists in one app on one platform, you also really lose people. A good solution to this issue would be to exclusively recommend the Movim client. Due to it being a web app, it’s compatible across all platforms (any desktop or mobile device regardless of OS), and is the only client that has so far successfully implemented a slew of advanced features that Deltachat does not have, such as Discord-like channels with text and group voice chat rooms, as well as screensharing. It still has some UX issues it needs to work on that will cause some friction with normies, but the dev is very open to suggestions of how to improve it, and is very active in developing it (the discord-like features were all implemented just a few months ago).

Does relevance matter? If so, why? I guess I’m trying to understand what made the OMEMO developer’s comment make you not want to approve it in comparison to the 19 other comments you did approve. What is your reasoning for thinking I owe you or anyone an explanation? You don’t owe anyone anything, I’m just trying to make sense of why you would choose to not publish that comment. Based on the information I have at hand, it seemed like you wrote some strong opinions about the bad qualities of XMPP, and then opted to not approve a comment with information that may have made your opinions seem less strong? Without further insight into why you didn’t want that comment seen on your blog, I personally can’t come up with a different explanation that fits. 🤷

Your blog post I linked to still has 19 comments left by other people on it from 2024. Did you not remove the OMEMO developer’s comment? Could you elaborate how was their response making your comment section a ‘dumping ground’? Was it not directly relevant to your issues with XMPP and OMEMO?

The main problem with XMPP (well for me anyway) is that the implementation of OMEMO that 99% of the apps use is woefully out of date The whole ‘OMEMO is out of date’ thing started with Soatok’s blog, however what is less known is that blogger removed a response in the comments from an OMEMO developer who clarified some things (you can it read here), which personally I think was rather odd/bad faith of them to do. According to that response, there’s nothing really wrong with the older OMEMO 0.3.0, as the developer considers it a stable standard that clients can safely implement, and the newer versions basically being public beta releases toward a stable ‘OMEMO 2’ standard that can eventually replace 0.3.0, and be stable enough for all XMPP apps to implement at once, hence why most apps are remaining on 0.3.0. I absolutely agree that Deltachat has by far a smoother onboarding process compared to XMPP, and I think for most people, Delta is probably the better option. Where XMPP shines is if someone needs access to more discord-like features, which is where the the Movim XMPP client (a web app that works across all platforms, Desktop and Mobile) specifically would shine, as it was able to use XMPP to have Discord-like servers with text and group voice chat rooms, as well as screensharing. It works quite well for the most part. There is still definitely some UX oddities in Movim that can add some friction, but the dev is quite open to suggestions for improvements, and it’s come a long way in recent months (the discord-like features for example were added just this year).

The video shows that even security cameras by companies like ADT will spy on you. Apparently 2/3 of US households have outdoor security cameras, and 1/3 have internal security cameras. Most people probably don't know how to set up their own secure entirely local security camera setup, so they just hire it done, which almost always means connecting it to a corporate cloud.

There's a number of ways we can build counter power, and not only does it materially help our situation, it also reduces the feeling of helplessness and despair dramatically, and you'll likely meet some friends along the way.

Here's a handy guide on how to get involved in that sort of stuff.

::: spoiler Part 1: The big picture 🖼️

The protests are good ways of meeting like-minded people in your community to form connections, as well as spreading awareness of local mutual aid groups so more can join or form ICE resistance groups who can join an encrypted chat to coordinate, alert neighbors, and talk strategy. It also is a good place for unions or union members to encourage others to unionize their workplaces, which can also ultimately work toward a national general strike, which is our most tangible and powerful collective action.

The country would be brought to its knees if suddenly deprived of profit and labor, allowing us to directly demand real changes (such as ending the war in Iran, ceasing support for the genocide of Palestine, and Abolishing ICE).

The General Strike was extremely effective in Chile in 2019, and had they not fallen for the trick of liberal reform, they would've had a successful revolution on their hands with virtually no bloodshed.

There are some concrete steps all of us can take toward enacting that hard-core general strike to make it more viable and bearable for us all. (the titles below expand if you click them). :::

::: spoiler Part 2: Learn First Aid ⛑️

Violence is being used against those who resist and it will only continue. It extremely important to have the skills to be able to keep yourself and others alive if they get hurt.

Tacticool Girlfriend provides a great introduction to building a personal first aid kit, called an IFAK, which can deal with things like bullet wounds and other serious bleeding wounds. I also want to emphasize her recommendation of only buying medical gear from reputable sources (not Amazon!), such as North American Rescue to avoid fakes that could cost you your life.

But you'll need to learn how to use that equipment, too. The best resource for that is to take a local Stop The Bleed class, which are pretty widely available in most places. They may cost a small fee, but can also sometimes be free. Alternatively, if you cannot access a local class, this video by PrepMedic will give you a solid understanding of how to use Tourniquets and Gauze for wound packing.

Injuries are less harmful if they are tended to early. Learning first aid can help conserve resources when healthcare becomes unaffordable. Having several medics in case of harm by police is an extremely powerful morale booster during a protest that may become a police riot. When you become comfortable with the basics of first aid, riot medicine is the next suggested step. :::

::: spoiler Part 3: Establish or join local Mutual Aid networks ✊

If you haven't already, get to know your neighbors. Mutual aid is a willingness to support and grow your community. This can include informal networks through friends, tenant/renter organizations, solidarity groups, and industrial unions.

These are groups using direct action to solve each other's problems. Building strong communities makes it difficult for fascism to take root. The actions of the government are going to hit every community hard, and the ones who build trust in each other and work together are most likely to survive. We've been building a list of resources in !inperson@slrpnk.net to help you on your way. Also check out @tinker@infosec.exchange to find existing groups in your area.

This isn't only for your own community protection. Your ability to organize today will change the political landscape tomorrow. When revolution occurs, the social organizations that show the greatest resilience through the regime are the ones typically calling the shots when the dust settles. When it comes to elections, get out the vote drives are useless if most of the voters are fascists. At some point, you have to do grassroots political education if you don't want fascist candidates winning elections. Mutual aid networks are excellent forums not only for teaching each other good political ideas, but demonstrating them in practice.

There's also some projects you can do that help build community (and can be fun in themselves!), for more info, go here, and scroll down to the "Fun Projects to Build Community) section" :::

::: spoiler Part 4: Join a Union to help prepare for a General Strike 💪

If you aren't in a union (or even if you are, it's worth dual-carding), consider joining the IWW to unionize your workplace (bonus: you'll get higher wages, better benefits, and more time off if you succeed!) to make a general strike possible.

Once you are in a union you and your coworkers will need to pressure your leadership to prepare for a general strike, as well as pressure them to organize with other unions to enact a general strike. This is especially true if you are in a more traditional union that isn't the IWW. Your local shop may need to organize directly with other unions if your union leaders are too cowardly to do so.

Most unions have a strike fund that can supplement your income during a general strike to make it more financially bearable (you should also save as much money as you can reasonably do, so it can also be used to keep yourself afloat during a strike). A General Strike is officially planned by the UAW for May 1st 2028, but it was planned before Trump was elected, and by then will be too late, so prepare now for one that may start sooner.

You can contact the IWW with the link below:

  • 🌍 US/Global: IWW (Français) - (Español)

And for our international friends, you should join one as well, as fascism is gaining momentum globally. If your country isn't listed below, just contact the IWW directly in the link above, and they'll help you set up a new local branch.

::: spoiler Part 5: Adopt Security Culture and Digital Camouflage 🛡️

Sometimes benign seeming efforts can turn into unexpected personal data collecting traps. Like an obscure website for exchanging contact info with other students turning into a global ad-tech surveillance network (Facebook), or innocent seeming online personality tests being use to harvest character profiles. Even Etsy, Reddit, Tinder, and Duolingo are feeding information to US Government Agencies like ICE.

Security culture is commonly used to describe the general awareness of such potential traps and how it can affect groups or entire communities. This goes beyond mere individual privacy efforts, as without joint efforts these often fail to work.

Especially in activist circles, security culture is paramount. For opsec reasons not everyone in the group might be aware of what clandestine efforts others are involved in, but with a general security culture many potential data leaks can be avoided.

Movements are made by the volume of their participants, and the easier and less dangerous it is to participate, the more people will get involved. As more people get involved, individual involvement becomes even less dangerous, creating a virtuous cycle.

We'll start it off with some General Advice:

  • Mentally wall off personal uniquely identifying info from your online presence, actively build a habit of opsec so that withholding information is your default mental state
  • Be careful about who you meet online
  • Use different, unrelated usernames, passwords & emails for every account. And try not to connect to those accounts with your real IP address (use Tor or a VPN)
  • Be mindful that anything done online leaves a trail
  • agents provocateurs may seek to find patsies willing to perform an ill-advised illegal activity in order to legitimize police repression. If someone is trying to pressure you, especially if you don't have a long and proven history with them, be extremely wary.

For a full guide on what encrypted communications platforms to use, and how to stay off the radar, read the Digital Camouflage section within the Monthly Meta post here (you'll need to scroll down. I'd add it here, but it won't fit in this comment). :::

I'd also highly recommend Full Spectrum Resistance to anyone who wants further info on how to resist (audiobook version here).

Graphene is good, though it's still pretty reliant upon Google not making life even harder for them, which it has been doing consistently.

A safer long-term option that is detached from Google's whims entirely is PostmarketOS, which isn't based on Android at all, but is instead a project based on Linux directly.

This video does a great job explaining the practical usefulness of the 'Collective dreaming' that Solarpunk provides. In short, it gives us a collective goal to aim toward, which then prompts us to figure out what the best way of achieving that goal is with the tools at hand.

In that way, I would put forward that Solarpunk provides a useful framework to address the issues we face today. At its core it encourages decentralized grassroots community building to address problems (the 'punk' part), which is generally more effective than spinning our collective wheels trying to reform political machinery that is fully corporate captured, and I would consider a form of prefiguration.

And the 'Solar' part encourages adopting practical and ecological technology to address the issue of our planet becoming uninhabitable from our current political and economic models; adopting renewable energy (which often scales down really well, helping out the decentralized part), viewing a healthy ecology as essential infrastructure to a prosperous existence, stopping consumerism with Degrowth, etc.

In practice, Solarpunk basically lets us collectively see a plausible outcome if we embraced Eco-Anarchism (basically combining what Catalonia was able to achieve in the 30's, along with a distinct focus on restoring our planet's ecosystems).

That it isn't some impractical sci-fi concept needing yet to be invented tech, but instead an achievable goal even with our existing technology, is a very encouraging and motivating concept, IMO.

Yeah, if they'd gone with a decentralized model, it'd be able to scale up without the extreme operating costs (Lemmy/piefed is a good example of that in practice). Currently our best decentralized/federated instant messengers are XMPP and Deltachat, which cost peanuts to host.

It is certainly not usable for the average person in it's current state, hence why I suggest donating to it to help with developing it. With proper funding and full-time devs, it would be able to focus on adding proper support to more phones, or potentially partner with a manufacturer like GrapheneOS just did with Motorola to get first-class support on a smaller handful of devices. Postmarket is our only long-term mobile option that will remain FLOSS and in the users best interest, we just have to support it and help build it up into something we can all use :)

I'm not entirely sure if that would be better than just adopting PostmarketOS, since forking AOSP would mean maintaining a fork of that entire ecosystem, and I'm unsure how they would deal with all the phone manufacturers dropping support for phones rather quickly, or using outdated kernels to access GPU and hardware drivers for said phones after the manufacturer drops support. Investing in PostmarketOS instead would bring with it much less stuff to fork, along with access to the mainline linux kernel (instead of outdated Android ones) that use open-source GPU drivers that can be effectively maintained, and it can support Android compatibility with a compatibility layer, Waydroid. A polished PostmarketOS ecosystem only seems to offer advantages compared to a forked AOSP, so if they're choosing which to invest in, Postmarket seems like the clear winner.

The kernel update issue on Android is going to be exactly the same for PostmarketOS and for the exact same reason: proprietary firmwares and/or drivers.

That is not the case, as PostmarketOS uses community made open-source drivers, even for the GPU, and all devices that it supports uses the mainline kernel, as all of the drivers they develop are upstreamed to mainline, instead of it being a proprietary driver that is locked to a specific kernel.

The open-source drivers aren't currently as polished as the proprietary ones, but as we've seen the open-source AMD driver for desktop, it can become the best option with community effort and funding.

and now you need to maintain both a GNU/systemd/Linux AND a compatibility layer with Android

The point of adopting Postmarket is that they could then rely on the open-source community to help with maintaining most of of the components, much like how Linux desktop or Linux Server works currently. Waydroid is developed by its own team, so they wouldn't need to fork that and maintain it to have access to Android apps (though they could help contribute to it if they wanted to).

From a security and privacy standpoint, Linux was never designed to handle hostile apps designed to aquire as much data as possible. Android has a sandboxing system

Android is Linux at the core, yet it was able to be hardened, which shows that PostmarketOS could be similarly hardened if such features were adequately funded and developed by the EU. Linux already has Wayland, which is a huge step forward for security, and Flatpak packages already have Android-like permissions built in (though they would need to modify how those work by default to increase security).

In theory of course. And please refrain from telling me why a global revolution would not work.

I’d love to know a source we can verify for this? Haven’t seen any verifiable announcement of this about Framework severing ties to DHH, or exactly what that entails. According to Nate, they told him behind closed doors that they withdrew support to Omarchy.

From what I understand, DHH is simply lying, or mis-representing what happened. I asked my Framework contact about this a few months ago and he told me straight-up that they did not send a Framework 13 Pro to Omarchy or DHH. It’s a “he said, she said” situation, but personally I’m inclined by believe my Framework contact who I have known personally for years, rather than DHH. Yeah, that’s what I meant by “Also, all of this happened a year ago”. It’s almost October; it’s been about a year. K.

Anarchism is the only ideology that says “Don’t give me power, instead spread all power out as much as possible to prevent dictatorships and ability to exploit others”, and from historical records, when it’s able to be tried it works like it says on the tin.

AntiX (based on Debian) is the only distro I know of that is developed by vocally anticapitalist leftist devs, even putting “proudly Amti-fascist” on their main page. They also are one of the few distros to take an anti-LLM stance.

Unfortunately, OpenMandriva’s president (warning, lunduke link as evidence) has declared the project “non-woke” and “anti-DEI”, which has resulted in it attracting a hard right community.

Update on the KDE situation: Nate has since closed the comments on his blog, and the one discussion thread on KDE Discuss about the AI Policy was closed suddenly without explanation after a KDE developer began to discuss the ethics of AI use. Nate then responded after the thread was closed with this: So as far as I can tell, the developers involved in proposing the AI policy do not want any discussion about AI ethics on their platforms.

So I accidentally triggered an online shitstorm in the process of trying to craft a set of more restrictive LLM usage guidelines for KDE. Sorry about that. :/ This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://pointieststick.com/2026/09/23/kde-and-ai-and-you-and-me/

In a forum thread about AI policy, Nate essentially completely shot down the idea of KDE taking on an anti-AI policy. He appears to be pro-AI.

(Sorry to bring up a contentious topic) KDE & AI/LLM policy

There’s a lot of embedded wisdom in Noah’s words, and I would recommend heeding it. Why? Because the process of forming a policy that restricts action is political, and politics (as practiced in a democratic, non-violent manner) is a tool that’s weak at forcing a group consensus when none already exists. This is especially true when the proposal comes from those without much influence or political power, and who aren’t key figures important to the project. Also keep in mind tons of KDE develo.

I think you are confusing terms. Scraping a website means to download copies of its pages. Mirroring means taking those scraped page copies and re-hosting them on your website. Since you said you were doing both of those things, that would mean you would be mass scraping the site to rehost (mirror) on yours. If you are not doing either of those, then you are not mass scraping or mirroring. It sounds like instead you just scraped a few pages of piefed, and then modified the CSS/HTML of the page itself for your own purposes? If so, that’s not as bad as I thought. However, I can guarantee you that no one here is interested in joining an isolated reddit clone that isn’t federated with Piefed or lemmy, and which is explicitly designed to eventually allow you to throw ads on it for passive income. That is precisely what we all were trying to escape when we left reddit for the fediverse.
