I had seen a few images of this arch for several years, and I had a good idea of where it was located. I had just never gone in search of it before April 6th. I had several hours to spend at the park and fairly mild temperatures for the significant distance and ascent I knew it would require (about 8 miles and 800 ft). I found it, took a quick cell phone snap to send to my husband, tagged the location in my GPS, and promptly lost any trace of light before I could take any other images with my camera. I drove from Amarillo, Texas to our place in rural northeast New Mexico yesterday afternoon. Conditions started out completely cloudy, but by the time I was climbing out of the mesalands and back onto the high plains - firmly in the middle of nowhere - the clouds started to break up. Looking back down at the mesalands, I saw the light and shadow creating interesting patterns and giving this scene a depth it usually lacks. After a major supercell thunderstorm had moved across the Texas Panhandle on June 23rd, the western skies were left completely clear. I was able to find an old windmill to position between myself and the setting sun for this snap.
