@McCulloch If you want something that's a little closer to the Windows look and function but also still feels like Linux, you might want to try Kubuntu (https://kubuntu.org/) It's based on Ubuntu but uses the KDE desktop instead of Ubuntu's unique interface style.

@McCulloch I'm far from an expert myself but from past tinkering you shouldn't have any trouble reading drives physically attached to the computer. Tying in to a Windows network was still annoying the last time I dabbled with Linux but maybe they've improved that since I last looked into it. Have fun!
