An alarming new @NBC@c.im report shows how the targeted anti-LGBTQ hate spewed by Libs of TikTok not only terrorizes individuals but impacts everyone — schools, hospitals, places of worship.

"NBC News identified 33 instances, starting in November 2020, when people or institutions singled out by Libs of TikTok later reported bomb threats or other violent intimidation."

As outlined in GLAAD's Social Media Safety Index: Anti-LGBTQ rhetoric on social media translates to real-world offline harms. Platforms must enforce their own policies against anti-LGBTQ hate and disinformation.

A quick #introduction - I work on social media platform accountability at GLAAD. I'm also an acclaimed queer filmmaker, as well as an LGBTQ film historian and archivist. Also a queer film critic and curator (basically my entire career has revolved around being a champion of LGBTQ films and filmmakers). Ah, this is nice to see. Evidence that I attended at least the red carpet of this year's closing night of Newfest (tho I didn't actually go in to see the film)! https://www.gettyimages.co.nz/detail/news-photo/jenni-olson-attends-the-all-the-beauty-and-the-bloodshed-news-photo/1435993727

The 2024 @glaad@mastodon.social Social Media Safety Index is out! This is our fourth annual report evaluating the six major platforms: TikTok, YouTube, X/Twitter, and Meta’s Facebook, Instagram, and Threads on LGBTQ safety, privacy, and expression. Spoiler Alert: They all got Fs except for TikTok (they got a D+)! https://glaad.org/smsi/social-media-safety-index-2024/

@james@strangeobject.space @iftas@mastodon.iftas.org - Hi James and please be kind with me as I'm new here and learning to navigate. Just wanted to let you know that IFTAS has been working with GLAAD on developing this system. I run our Social Media Safety program and we've been providing guidance to all the platforms for some years in an effort to get them to improve policies with regard to LGBTQ safety, privacy and expression. We worked with IFTAS on the language they crafted for this sign-up system. Of course it's fantastic that so many servers/instances (such as yours) already are well aware and prioritizing this, but of course many are not. And having IFTAS provide this leadership to give folks the opportunity to stand up proactively for these values has been a powerful thing (it's pretty amazing to see). Anyway, that's a bit of context for you. IFTAS may have more to add. You can learn more about our program and the other things we do at GLAAD.org. Thanks so much.

@Gargron@mastodon.social Really great to see this - especially the clarifications around anti-LGBTQ content and behavior (No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, xenophobia, or casteism. Transphobic behavior such as intentional misgendering and deadnaming is strictly prohibited. Promotion of "conversion therapy" is strictly prohibited.) @glaad@mastodon.social
