from the top of my head there is a file ~/.config/dontaskagainrc that you can manually edit. I’m sure it’s somewhere in the settings gui as well but no idea

Thats great and all, but completely non-actionable. Tell me instead - what exactly should I do? (should have mentioned that I already have a pinephone and grapheneOS on a GOOGLE pixel)

Sounds like bad planning. There are like 3 other e2ee messengers that are open source and have enough funding to operate for years without doing appeal-to-emotion dona-... extortion campaigns

Well, when talking about server costs, Threema somehow has been running on a 5€ lifetime license and business customer subscribtions for over a decade. While briar and simplex are peer to peer and have nearly no ops costs. Sure, it can be made to be very expensive, but I'm arguing that doing so is a business/design decision. Servers can help improve the UX, but are expensive. Threema for example, only stores media on their servers temporarely, so they have way lower storage cost with a small tradeoff in userfriendlyness (of having to migratethe old media files you want to keep when you get a new phone). And so on. If your nonprofit only has 65k, don't hire multiple devs and provide nice-to-have features that lead to high ops expenses in servers and storage. It's called minimal viable prpduct for a reason.

I once waited a whole year for debian to ship the next version to get an update for an app that had a bug, that was already fixed upstream. Every day I would open the app and experience the bug. Anger, frustration, shaking the mouse. Every. Fucking. Day.

We’re not.

Huh? You linked me an article where server cost is the lions share of signal operation.

Most users doesn’t even donate 1€ when using free messengers.

How does signal operate then.

They don’t offer ANY “nice-to-have” features

If they don't have high server costs, unlike the example from the article you brought up, they should hire cheaper software engineers from a different country or scale down development and have a longer runway.

Like I said - them having this problem is probably due to poor planing.

There is also nanoKVM which is open source and quite a bit cheaper. Should do the job just as well.

Arch was definitely tricky to get right for me at yhe beginning. You often have a choise between multiple similar tools for each job and you only know the pros and cons or what works and what doesn't after trying. I did 3-4 fresh installs before getting it right for my needs and hardware. (for example, btrfs with buttermanager requires a completely different fs layout than btrfs with snapper, I picked buttermanager first, didn't like it after 2 weeks and had to do a fresh install) For that it's handy to have a good backup of your important data, ideally outside of your pc, just so there is no risk of fucking it up somehow. I definitely recommend using btrfs and using it's snapsotting feature through snapper or timeshift or something else, again, multiple tools for the same job, different pros and cons. That way you can roll back after fucking something up. But make sure to try it out a couple of times before the case comes where you have to rely on it, so you're sure that it does work and you know how to properly do it. I prefer arch cause I was able to customize it more and I love the up to date packages and the AUR. But there is some additional maintenance you have to do like once or twice a year and you have to pay attention to news for manual interventions when there is a breaking update. So it is way more involved than other distros. Yet it has been rock solid for me and should be very reliable once you know your way around. But tbh. as long as you are completely happy with mint, there is no reason to change anything.

it's probably a file on the disk somewhere so try using the find command on / and filter name by *.icc extension. You should spot it from there.

Using the neutral term “information” here is doing a lot of heavy lifting for your argument. Nobody is banning the youth from accessing wikipedia or a library or minecraft. And if a young person really wants to watch at porn, torrenting/piracy will always be there without age verification. Speaking of minecraft and circumvention, do you remember the uncensored library map? techdirt.com/…/routing-around-damage-censored-rep… I bet someone inclined to do so could host a pornhub mirror/proxy inside of a modded minecraft map. But also, if the parents decide that it’s part of growing up they can just give their kids access to porn. Oh uuuh I mean, not porn, iNfOrMaTiOn.

You keep speaking in extremes and absolutes. There is also pornographic content walking outside on the street in the city if you so wish to classify it (and some people certainly do to they point where they get turned on by seing a bare ankle). Certainly the pictures and videos on wikipedia which you chose to consider pornographic rather than neutrally informative have a different set of qualities then what you would find in the extreme sections of porn-serving websites. There is a middle ground. You can give partial access. And age verification is one more tool for that (we already have parental controls for routers and mobile internet simcards and smart devices) I don’t like nor want age verification btw. I just don’t agree with your arguments against it, because I find them weak.

The amount of patches is as bad of a metric for judging development pace or quality of the result as counting the lines of code.

Hey, I happened to have a handful of old smartphones that still have an ok battery and just collect dust in the shelf. If you want me to ship one to you, pm your address. Gonna help my linux buddies so that they can scan QR codes if their OS crashes. (not sarcasm)

I didn’t jump to it. It’s the primary reason for age verification. Calling it “information” to avoid talking about it is intellectually disingenuous.

Funny thing is, I have 2 keyboards and a standalone numpad and one mouse, but one of the keyboards registers itself in the system as keyboard and mouse, because it has mouse moving hotkeys. So my system literally thinks I have 3 keyboards and 2 mice. I use a split ergo keyboard for typing. (this one has the mouse stuff) A 65% keyboard for gaming (so I have lots of room for the mouse and don’t have to change the keybindings for the split one) A numpad off to the left so it doesn’t block mouse space, need it for some games and spreadsheets. After a work day is over I shove the split keyboard under the monitor and pull out the gaming one and place the mouse differently. People that visit always comment on how weird that is, but it works for me.

On lemmy you’ll allways find the weirdos and elitists that have been pushed out of the mainstream. The linux bsod has been introduced pretty recently, so it’s normal for few people to have experienced it yet. Also somewhat relevant xkcd: xkcd.com/1053/

It’s a subculture phenomenon, and lemmy linux is a subculture of a subculture, so it’s more intense. I’ve been a moderator on some linux reddits in the past. And the less users there were in the sub, the more negativity, rudeness, gatekeeping and other toxicity was there. But ofc what I say is just an opinion based on my subjective experience so idk.

Self-Host Weekly (11 September 2026) Daniel Brendel released a virtual pet game that’s a cross between Minecraft and Tamagotchi pixelated, adorable virtual pet game © 2025 by Daniel Brendel last commit on Nov 30, 2025 huh? api.github.com/repos/danielbrendel/…/events aah. I don’t think this is the case here, but now I wonder whether rewriting git history dates to be more spread out and go further back before uploading an AI slop project to github is a viable way to appear more legitimate.
