Launched in November 1810, during the Napoleonic Wars, the invasion of the Isle de France was a successful British amphibious operation. The Royal Navy landed at Grand Bale, marched inland, engaged the French, and captured the capital Port Napoleon.
When the French surrendered, they relinquished their last territory in the Indian Ocean. During the invasion, the British captured five French frigates and 209 heavy cannon.

At that point, HMS Bucephalus pursued the French frigates alone until 12 September, when the French frigates came about and attempted to overhaul her. During the skirmish James Noulton fractured his wrist.
Captain Charles Pelly, Bucephalus's commander, turned about and tried to lead the pursuing French over shoals, but realising the danger they hauled off and abandoned the chase, returning to Europe.
