Gurdeep Pandher of the Yukon
In a world drowning in conflict and grief, we crave what keeps us alive: joy—our daily bread; hope—our living water; kindness—the roof over our souls.
Hello, Ottawa! I arrived here to receive an award from the Governor General tomorrow. This is happening because of your love, dear people 🙏🏽
Today at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, a joyful moment talking with the Governor General of Canada, the Honourable Louise Arbour, who presented me with my medal along with other distinguished Canadians. This is an informal photo taken during lunch; the official photo from the award ceremony will arrive in 1–2 days.
I believe that when we suppress one emotion, we dull them all. We cannot selectively mute sadness and keep joy at full volume. The heart does not work that way.

Downtime is not only something to endure. It is something to value, the way you value a slow-cooked meal or a story that takes its time. It is the time when your mind reorganizes, when your heart catches up to what your life has been asking of you.

A body can carry sorrow for years in tightened shoulders and a clenched jaw. When I lift my arms under an open sky, I am not trying to outrun sadness. I am giving it space to breathe. There is a kind of positivity that demands a smile as proof of worth, and I do not trust that kind.

By 2026, digital media had engulfed everyday life. In 2026, I created an experience through the tactile, quiet, unhurried act of reading on paper. Inside The Gurdeep Magazine, you’ll find essays crafted for slow, quiet reading, all centered on joy, hope, and positivity. If you'd like to hold printed words that warm your hands, heart and mind, visit http://gurdeep.ca/magazine.
If there is one thing the Yukon teaches, it is that light returns, but it returns on its own time. The healthiest positivity I know is the patience to wait without collapsing, and the courage to act without guarantees. I keep hope in my heart not because it makes everything easy, but because it keeps me open. And an open heart can still laugh, still create, still love, even when the road is rough.

Joy, in its healthiest form, is recognition. It says, I am here. You are here. We are sharing this minute on the same land, under the same wide sky. Happiness is not the elimination of fear and memory. It is learning to hold them without letting them drive.

Time moves in only one direction, carrying each moment into permanent memory the instant it passes. This fundamental truth, that every moment exists only once and can never truly return, shapes the human experience in profound ways. The past dissolves behind us like footprints in sand. The future shimmers ahead like a mirage on the horizon. Only this present breath, this heartbeat, this now, holds the treasure of genuine joy.

Every stop reminded me that joy is not only personal. It is shared air. Strangers became a chorus. People waved from windows. Elders nodded. Children laughed without needing a reason. Some people told me they had been carrying heaviness for years.

Hard days will come the way weather comes, sometimes predicted and sometimes sudden. When they arrive, try to meet them with a steadier story. Tell yourself that difficulty is part of being alive, not a stain on your character. Tell yourself that you can carry joy like a pocket stone, smooth from use. Tell yourself that hope is a skill you can practice. Tell yourself that your energy is precious and your glow is worth protecting.

Dance has become more than a performance for me. It has become a way of meeting myself in silence. When I move, feelings have somewhere to go. Grief can travel down my arms. Anxiety can leave through my feet. Hope can rise through my chest without pretending everything is fine.

On this small planet we call home in this huge universe, no land is truly foreign, no person is alien, we are all citizens of Earth, bound together by our shared existence.

Dear friends, I have exciting news: my magazine is now on bookstore shelves. Munro’s Books in Victoria, BC, Canada has officially become the first bookstore to carry it. Founded in 1963, Munro’s is a large independent bookstore in Victoria, British Columbia, located in a landmark heritage building on Government Street. A huge thank you to my friend in Victoria, Robert Thompson, for making this happen. Please stop by the store at 1108 Government Street to pick up your copy.
The ultimate form of happiness, then, is freedom. Freedom from the need for external validation, freedom from fear-based action. It’s not about feeling artificially elevated or maintaining a forced smile. It’s about the absence of inner turbulence when you stop needing approval and stop being driven by anxiety.

The healthy side of joy is not a command to feel good. It is a capacity to receive what is good when it arrives, even if it arrives softly, even if it arrives while grief is still seated at the table.

Part of sadness runs deeper than we realize because it is woven into attachment. We feel sad when something we value is threatened, changed, or lost. Even small moments of sadness can reveal how much meaning we place on a person, a place, a plan, or a version of ourselves.

Joy, hope, and positivity can sound like soft words for hard times. They do not erase pain, and they do not deny danger. Instead, they help people endure, adapt, and continue to act when circumstances would otherwise overwhelm the body and the mind.

Now, if you would like to, you can also buy a single issue of the magazine before making the decision to commit to a subscription.

When you stop filling every gap with noise, your senses begin to sharpen. I started noticing things in the Yukon winter that I had walked past a hundred times.

Our relationship with sadness runs deep because sadness is not a single emotion. It is a convergence of love, memory, limit, and longing. It is the honest response to change in a world we do not fully control. When we approach sadness with respect, it often reveals a quieter strength.

Happiness does not come closer to you when you chase it, because chasing assumes it is missing. When your mind keeps asking, "Did I get enough?" peace and joy cannot stay. You enjoy what comes, but you do not depend on it. Pleasure visits. Pain visits. You welcome both.

True joy has no short-lived shelf life. It doesn’t dim when the weather of your life changes. It appears when you come back into tune with yourself, when you stop pulling in opposite directions, when the search for what you’re “missing” finally loosens its grip around you. In that quiet wholeness, a joy rises, plain, steady, and endlessly renewable.

The dance or any kind of movement is not a denial. It is a hand extended across distance, across culture, across misunderstanding. It says, We can meet here. We can be different and still belong to one another. And when you feel that belonging, even for a moment, you realize happiness is not somewhere else. It is something we build, together, one step at a time.

At the heart of our restlessness lies a persistent question: "Did I get enough?"This question is a reason that prevents peace from taking root. It creates an endless cycle of achievement and disappointment, where no accomplishment satisfies for long. The mind that constantly measures and compares cannot rest, and without rest, there is no genuine happiness.

When we’re not defensive or defeated, we can ask better questions: What is this situation teaching me? What assumptions need revision? What strengths have I not yet utilized? This investigative approach transforms setbacks into research opportunities, making each difficulty a contributor to our accumulated wisdom rather than evidence of inadequacy.
