Finland has more than 700 libraries for a population of 5.6 million, offering everything from podcast studios and 3D printing to tennis rackets and swimming pool passes. According to Vänttinen, the most borrowed items after books in Helsinki libraries are spaces: rooms that can be pre-booked, free of charge, to meet, study, hold political discussions or make music. Among portable items, board games and console games top the list. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20260618-the-weird-and-wonderful-libraries-of-finland

Reversing the direction of time doesn’t prevent the equations from working. That is, time could point either way and we wouldn’t be able to tell the future from the past. Yet we see a clear difference between the past and the future. This is ‘the second problem of physical time’. How do we reconcile the fact that our equations work just as well whichever way time is running with the irreversibility of time that we experience in the world? https://www.sciencefocus.com/science/the-closer-we-look-at-time-the-stranger-it-gets

Detection therefore falls to what happens after an agent is already inside – a scenario the country has had ample opportunity to rehearse: a Russian agent of influence alleged in the Oireachtas though never proven nor entirely discounted; a British asset alleged at the top of government back in 2022; and a GRU officer or Russian spy who was revealed in 2023 as having taken an actual Trinity degree under a false identity in 2018. https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2026/07/20/sinead-osullivan-spies-foreign-intelligence-services-russia-gru-britain-trinity-oireachtas/

OpenAI has become one of the largest liabilities in recent economic history. You can argue that OpenAI’s no longer the focal point of the AI bubble — you can talk all you want about open source models or Anthropic or any number of other elements — but without OpenAI, the AI industry doesn’t exist, and the justification for trillions of dollars of capex evaporates.  https://www.wheresyoured.at/the-openai-bubble/?ref=ed-zitrons-wheres-your-ed-at-newsletter

Let's face it. Microsoft has built Windows with the assumption that you're using your PC on a daily basis and perhaps even leaving it on when you go to sleep at night so that it can reboot while you catch some ZZZs. If you have a PC in a drawer that you only pull out on occasion or after weeks of inactivity, Redmond intends to punish you with long wait times and annoying alerts demanding that you reboot to install an update.

On May 8, 2026, graduates at the University of Central Florida (UCF) loudly booed commencement speaker Gloria Caulfield after she praised artificial intelligence as the "next industrial revolution"
The incident occurred during the ceremony for the College of Arts and Humanities and the Nicholson School of Communication and Media Graduates, many entering creative fields directly impacted by AI, reacted with visible disdain to Caulfield's optimistic framing of the technology

I used all our long drives every summer through France, to our camping destination, to brainwash my kids with my music. Rem, Horslips, Aslan, Tom Lehr, The Dubliners, Neil Young. We had a 5 CD player box in the boot of our car. Packed out with MP3 bootleg music. Years before Spotify. They grew up loving that music, and never knowing why;-)

Again, loneliness isn’t simply the result of being alone. That’s what researchers like Jones and O’Sullivan refer to as ‘social isolation’, which tends to be a bit easier to spot. Richard, for example, might be isolated because he lives alone, but researchers wouldn’t know how lonely he was unless they asked him. https://www.sciencefocus.com/wellbeing/loneliness-research-treatable

Andy Burnham visited one of the poorest towns in the North of England yesterday and asked the local mayor what were the three priorities to revitalize the area. “The first is the hospital” he said, “It’s there, but there are just not enough doctors and nurses to fully staff it He pulls out his cell phone, talks for a couple of minutes, and then announces: “Done, when I’m Prime Minister a team of doctors and nurses will arrive at the end of the month”

APIs and identity systems are primary targets, with attackers bypassing front-end defenses to exploit core business logic at scale, according to the report.

For those unfamiliar, Ventoy is an open-source utility that lets users create a bootable USB drive once and then simply copy ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD, or EFI files onto it without repeatedly formatting the drive. It supports both legacy BIOS and UEFI boot modes, Secure Boot, and a wide range of operating systems, making it one of the most versatile tools in the category. https://www.neowin.net/amp/rufus-alternate-ventoy-improves-upon-one-of-windows-11s-system-requirements

The 2023 study found that the feral dogs living near the Chernobyl Power Plant showed distinct genetic differences from dogs living only some 10 miles away in nearby Chernobyl City. While this may seem to suggest that these dogs have undergone some type of rapid mutation or evolution due to radiation exposure, this study is only a first step in proving that hypothesis.

Fermions for instance, stack neatly into the available energy states to form the so-called Fermi sea But what happens if one forces interacting atoms to continuously cycle through extreme conditions, smoothly shifting them from strongly repelling each other to strongly attracting each other? The researchers found that carefully repeating this interaction cycle drives atoms out of their normal ground state and into a highly excited yet remarkably organized configuration https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/06/260619101330.htm

Among other things, mutation and cross-breeding are "in". There is the so-called "Frankenshoe",
Then there's also the snoafer (the sneaker and loafer), which The Wall Street Journal coined "the footwear equivalent of the spork"; and the loafer boot, which is spared its own portmanteau but which Vogue says has the ladylike "sensibility of a top-handle bag".

Watching at home “is a lower risk way to try something new” and that financial pressure was a key reason that they attended in-person theatre less often than they would like. Indigo’s report states that “there is very little evidence that filmed theatre reduces in-person attendance of theatre overall” and that 93% of survey respondents who saw at least one filmed theatre production in the cinema or via streaming also attended a performance in person.

We can be pretty sure that the world changed, for good, one day about 65.95 million years ago, when a lump of interplanetary rock, 10-15 kilometres wide, crashed into the Yucatan peninsula in New Mexico, causing a massive explosion, a huge crater, wild fires and a planetary tsunami The resulting pall of dust, ash and smoke encircled the globe, blotting out the sun for months, probably years. The global dust-cloud changed the climate for-ever.

Mercor, Outlier, Task-ify, Turing, Handshake, and Micro1 are platforms that connect human experts to AI labs for training data creation, often paying freelancers $60–$200 per hour for tasks like prompt writing and response evaluation. These companies support major players like Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic by providing customized datasets through remote contractors.
( In reality they can pay as little as $16 an hour. It's the modern day digital sweatslop. Lipsticking the Ai 🐷 )
This is the way;+(

Films could be cut or banned if, ‘in the opinion of the Censor’, they were ‘indecent, obscene, blasphemous’ or ‘subversive of public morality’. The phrase was astutely drafted: it meant whoever held the statutorily independent post at any given time thereafter was empowered to call the shots. India was not conquered by the British government,” he says. It was conquered by one British company occupying one office block in Leadenhall Street, EC1. The East India Company eventually had 200,000 troops – twice the size of the British Army – while controlling the richest country in the world for profit. By the 1780s, around 75% of British MPs held East India Company shares. Perhaps 20% were former EIC figures who had used their fortunes to buy parliamentary seats. https://thedailybritain.co.uk/polanski-dalrymple-empire-palestine-india-balfour-bold-politics-2026/

I understood the importance of cultivating a professional network. But that email was a jolt — and an introduction to a certain group of people whom we lived among but who, we were realizing, saw the world differently. To me, she was a friend, which is someone to share struggles with. To her, I realized, we were also nodes in a network — of people who might one day connect you to opportunity. She had gone home and realized vulnerability was a liability.

1954 was a big year for both companies. Fender launched the Stratocaster that year, and Thomann was founded the same year. Fender instruments landed in Thomann’s catalog not long after, and they’ve stayed there ever since. Thomann says it’s carried the brand with genuine conviction for more than 70 years now, and plenty of Thomann employees play Fender guitars themselves. https://www.gearnews.com/thomann-sues-fender-guitar
