Ukraine honors the defenders Russia killed behind bars
On 28 July, Ukraine remembers soldiers and civilians executed, tortured, or killed in Russian captivity. It marks Olenivka, where a 2022 Russian attack killed 50+ POWs and wounded 130.
Ukraine's parliament set the memorial day in July 2025, and this year it falls on the fourth anniversary of the attack.

Russia's aerial campaign against Ukraine’s civilians showed no sign of slowing this week.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia launched around 1,450 attack drones, dropped more than 1,640 guided bombs, and fired 99 missiles at targets across Ukraine over the past seven days.
The attacks killed and injured civilians, damaged homes and infrastructure, and culminated in the largest ballistic missile attack on Kyiv since the start of the full-scale invasion.

For 16 years, Viktor Orbán built a political system in Hungary—a loyal president, stacked institutions, intelligence chiefs aligned to the party.
Magyar is taking it apart. Parliament voted 139–6 to remove President Sulyok. Every Orbán-era spy chief has been dismissed. A 12-year term limit is now constitutional.
Budapest unblocked €6.6 billion in EU arms funding for Ukraine. Two of six accession clusters have opened. Progress made—but there is still a long way to go.

Ukraine's refinery campaign crossed a line this summer: at least 194 strikes in the first half of 2026—11 times last year's pace—have driven Russian oil refining to its lowest since 2005.
The reach is near-total. On 6 July, drones hit Omsk, Russia's largest refinery, some 2,500 km from Ukraine—the last of its 11 biggest gasoline producers still standing.
The cost is now landing at home: officials on bikes, more than 55 regions rationing, and dirtier fuel legalized.
