“The targeting of trans people - and specifically trans youth and trans women in sports - is not a policy agenda. It is a strategic operation. Understanding it as policy produces the wrong response. Understanding it as strategy produces the right one.
Jason Stanley, in How Fascism Works, identifies the targeting of vulnerable minorities as a core mechanism of authoritarian consolidation. The function is not primarily to harm the targeted group, though that harm is real and intentional. The primary function is to test the solidarity of potential opposition coalitions, to find and exploit the fracture lines, and to establish a precedent: that some members of the coalition can be sacrificed when the political cost of defending them is judged too high.
Every successful authoritarian project has done this. The question it is always asking of the opposition is: is there anyone in your coalition you will abandon to protect the rest? Because if the answer is yes, we know exactly how to proceed. We find that person. We make defending them as costly as possible. And we watch the rest of the coalition either hold together or fracture. If they fracture, we learn where the next fracture line is, and we push there.
The targeting of trans people is not the end of this strategy. It is the test. And what the test is measuring, in real time, is whether LGBTQ organizations, progressive coalitions, and pro-democracy movements will sacrifice their most vulnerable members when the pressure is sufficient.

“On Monday, NHS England published 10 evidence reviews purporting to show that the quality of evidence for hormone therapy for transgender youth is low. The reviews were released alongside an announcement that the healthcare system would be banning new hormone prescriptions for transgender youth under the age of 18. But upon closer examination, the evidence reviews appear to be an extreme example of politically-manufactured science—similar to other reviews that have come out of the UK in recent months to provide political justification for banning gender-affirming care. Across the 10 reviews, 547 full-text screenings resulted in just 17 studies included—a staggering 97% exclusion rate. The reviews used exclusion criteria designed to guarantee that result, discarded some of the most significant transgender care studies published in the last decade for nonsensical reasons, and then reached what appears to be a predetermined conclusion: that there is insufficient evidence that hormone therapy for trans youth works”

She started (again) the application process yesterday, having finally got all the docs certified etc, only to find that there is no longer a specific overseas route form on the gov website.
She doesn’t know when this changed 🤦♀️🤷♀️
A search found a few references to the forms but all the links are broken.
Applying for the DE SBGG took months because the rules didn’t understand the specific situation (the lovely lady at the Standesamt who was dealing with elodie was dogged in her determination tho 💕)

One of the tiny number of trans women athletes whose handful of successes propelled them into an unwanted shitstorm, and led to bans on trans women competing at national and international level.
If you saw the work she put in, and her absolute dedication to the sport you’d know her success was well deserved
I hope that her efforts and visibility are not for nothing
And that the next generation of trans women are able to compete and enjoy their sport without constant harassment, discrimination and worse
I don’t really care about competitive sports but I do care about the message it sends to young trans and non binary people who see that they’re not welcome in cycling, swimming etc….

But:
No keyboard backlight (been using the touchscreen instead. Might be that they remedy this with a new interchangeable keyboard), no sd card slot (not really an issue because elodie is trying to use her phone less), no front camera (can’t decide how much of an issue this is)
