I am a guy from southern germany. I like scouting, trains and computers. Politically, I would consider myself as a democratic socialist.
(For anyone wondering, yes this is from the same guy, as !DeckPacker@piefed.blahaj.zone)

I guess gender is pretty much meaningless in my opinion. It probably should be abolished. But also, it's fine if people care about their own gender. It's not that big of a deal as people make it out to be.

Gender is a social construct and describes a certain way we choose to act and dress etc. So it's pretty much impossible to be wrong about your gender if you are honest about your ambitions. The only way I could see someone being "wrong" about their gender is if someone says they are a certain gender but deliberately chooses to act in accordance with another. But even then, the line is blurry, so it would be stupid to police, what "true" gender expression is supposed to be.

That isn't even a real insult. I think you need to get off the internet and go touch some grass or something.

It really depends on the video game I guess. There are a lot of video games, I would consider high art, but there are others, I wouldn't. That's really subjective though and other people will probably consider other games as art than me. But there is no way to objectively determine what art is. My personal definition is like I determine the gender of a person. If the artist says, it's art, then it is art.

I don't know what the fuck you are talking about. It's still sold, so it definitely has a market value. If you are talking about sociatal value, then I disagree even more firmly. Art has a lot of value, regardless of what medium it is delivered by. You know that movies and video games are digital art, right?

That is incredible, I think, I will be using this more often, because arguing again and again about the same few points is exhausting.

As I have previously expressed, I am firmly against allowing AI contributions to our project mainly due to ethics reasons. In my opinion, we as a quite political project, that tries to radically rethink social media as a self-governed, community-led project out of fascists control, can’t simply put our head in the sand and ignore what is happening around us. At the end of the day, AI is mainly a tool for capitalists to take all of our hard work, strip it of all of it’s intent and meaning and reproduce it without paying us a dime or even acknowledge where it came from. We as free software devs should value and appreciate each others hard work, not just exploit it without permission. There is already projects to “free” GPL licenced code, by just reproducing it with AI to not have to abide by it’s terms. Additionally, AI significantly harms the people (that are hired to filter and fine tune AIs for inhumane pay) and the environment. Producing code with AI makes us understand our code less, there is a huge difference between actively writing code and checking code, someone (or something) else produced. This will inevitably lead to worse, more insecure code, even if experienced devs use it. AI can also make developers dependent on it, as we loose the understanding of the nitty-gritty details over time, because we don’t have to think about them anymore. This is actually exactly, what the companies are designing it for. We should foster a strong developer community, that is able to properly maintain this codebase independently from any AI. Because AI can’t stay this cheap, and if we depend on it to much, that might fuck us over. Due to all of these reasons and more, I don’t think of AI as a neutral “tool” as Linus Torvalds sees it. A tool isn’t necessarily neutral, a nuclear bomb is also just a tool. I think it is increasingly important morally, but also practically for our long term survival as a project, to explicitly reject the use of this tooling for producing code or participating in discussion. This is also not some wild, out there take, quite a few projects have taken this step and it seems to have worked out pretty well for them. An example, I could think of is servo (https://book.servo.org/contributing/getting-started) I know, this would be hard to enforce, but it’s also about taking a stand and maybe making some people think twice about making a lazy slop contribution. This shouldn’t come at the expense of people making real contributions of course. If were not really sure, we should give people the benefit of the doubt, because having to prove that you really made the code would also be really annoying. But we could still stop the worst, most obvious cases. And it would be a step in the right direction, I think.

Oh, that worked, thank you! Maybe you could implement the search suggestions URL into the OpenSearch (because at least when I added it via right click add search engine, it only added the search URL), but that could be an error on my part. Also, I am just curious, where do you get the search suggestions from? Do you just query one of the engines?

Would you say, it is worth it to pay for a VPS for Pangolin? Hey, I am currently paying 5,50€ a month for a Hetzner VPS to selfhost a Pangolin instance. I’ve come to quite rely on Pangolin, because I have to access all of my selfhosted services from my home server from remote. That’s because I have to keep my server at home (while I live in a student dorm, which doesn’t allow using their network to host servers). Also their authentication and private resources are really good for security and exposing ssh and other stuff from my home server to authenticated clients. Anyway, I like this setup, because it is fully FOSS and I have 100% control of what my VPS does. It is really expensive though and I am trying to reduce my monthly expenses right now. I saw online, that you can get a free managed instance of Pangolin on their website (https://pangolin.net/pricing Cloud). It would meet all my needs, but I wouldn’t be 1. Fully FOSS (because they probably run the business licensed version of their software) and 2. I wouldn’t have full control. These services work by managing all the https certs themselves, so the have to decrypt all their traffic and send it through the tunnel to your server. Theoretically, Pangolin could log all my traffic to and from my server, which would be a huge privacy risk. But probably they’re not, because that would be really impractical…? I don’t know. Do you think, it would be worth the privacy tradeoff for the cost savings?
