By Land And Sea dot ie
ByLandAndSea.ie is about travelling to and from Ireland without flying. A how-to guide, and a campaign to improve services.
We need simpler streamlined integrated booking systems and connections for travel across land and sea in Europe, including from Ireland via Britain into continental Europe.
People should not be led into taking destructive flights because booking systems, connection issues and costs of land and sea based travel prevent them from taking the better option of land and sea based travel.
After cutting the subsidy for international night trains in December 2025 the French Government has chosen to subsidize… the flight route between Strasbourg and Munich. Yet, these two cities were served by the discontinued Paris-Vienna night train!

Rail Sail from Britain to Ireland is back! Happy to announce that Transport for Wales have restored the Rail Sail ticket option from Britain to Ireland! Thanks to all the Rail-Sail-ers who brought this issue to light and raised it with Transport for Wales to get it resolved. https://bylandandsea.ie/2025/11/03/sail-rail-tickets-restored/

Sail Rail update: Today we phoned Irish Ferries, Stena and Transport for Wales for clarification on Sail Rail tickets. Irish Ferries and Stena both saying you can book Sail Rail starting from Ireland (picking up train tickets at Dublin or Rosslare port), but you can no longer book Sail Rail tickets starting from Britain due to decision by Transport for Wales. We are in contact with Transport for Wales to advocate for the return of this option, latest is that they will phone us back.
British Rail services should consider the needs of people using British rail services to connect between Ireland and Europe! Can you fill out this survey and call for better connections between Ireland and mainland Europe via Britain by rail? (lining up of ferry and train times, lower fares, reduction of connections needed, easier connection to Eurostar from Ireland) ? https://bettertransport.org.uk/rail-reform-survey/
@ElizabethHilliardSoprano@mastodon.ie it was possible, now no longer possible due to decision by British Rail authorities, see seat 61 link above
