I'm sorry you feel this way, but again you are barking up the wrong tree as we can't do anything about it... except what you can do too: protest to the people who want to impose this upon us. Bringing this issue up here or on Discuss is pointless: We know, we are aware, we are against it, we don't want it, we realise there are ulterior motives from corrupt actors, and we will do what we can to oppose them. But this, posting to Discuss, complaining about KDE being indifferent here (which it isn't) is probably the most unproductive thing you could do. You are tying up resources of volunteers who are already on your side. Like you say organising a protest, writing to the powers-that-be, educating your local/state/national representative, all these thing help. But this is just consuming volunteers' time up in moderating a potential flamewar on a topic that we (and I would argue everybody else here) already knows about.

But where is this letter coming from? Did kde implement the age verification?

No.

I haven’t seen any confirmation about it.

It hasn't even been considered.

I think developers can do something about it. They don’t want to, maybe for obvious reasons, and I respect their choice.

Can you point me to the... what? Survey? you are getting this information from? What are we talking here? 90%+ of all FLOSS developers?

I ask because it is usually quite hard to get FLOSS developers to all agree on anything. I am surprised you got a monolithic response to such a controversial topic.

You should probably not take the opinion of one developer as the official position of the whole of KDE. KDE has not got an official position on this topic yet because there is still too much up in the air: are these laws going to stick? Will there be a loophole or exemption for FLOSS? Will it be possible of have the thing disabled be default and just be there for product manufacturers to activate in their products sold in the affected regions? Will it even fall to the devs of desktop projects to like ours to implement this? Will it matter at all or is this all just theatre and the user can just input anything, say, 01/01/1901, and be done with it? And, probably most important of all: Will KDE as a community comply? This is not up to one developer. There is usually lot of discussion, often a vote. There are lot of different nationalities and people with diverse opinions. Just because one contributor has expressed an opinion, does not a done deal make.

I agree with you, wholeheartedly. However, Nate has a lot of influence and no doubt if he thinks it must be done then likely it will.

Less than you think... Not that Nate is not a well-recognised dev in and out of KDE. But you have to know that FLOSS devs are incredibly opinionated and stubborn, even the shy ones that don't talk much. Many of them started and persist within FLOSS because they have a clear view of what is right and wrong, and it is obvious that this issue is going to rub very many contributors the wrong way big time. In the end, for better or worse, KDE is a flat organisation and the voice and vote of the person who translated the labels on the weather widget counts as much as that of the veteran power dev who wrote KHTML.

Nothing against him personally of course.

Liekwise. I would go as far as considering him a friend. We do disagree on stuff though.

I’ll still be pulling my donations, and if they do decide to not implement it then I’ll be more than happy to resume. At the end of the day I’m powerless to really affect change on their end, albeit trying to voice my opinion in the matter.

Of course! This was never about convincing you otherwise. It was about pointing out that the situations is... complicated and that the opinion of one person does not represent the position of the whole organisation.

Correct. In fact, once you rename a tab, that name “sticks” even if you move to another folder within that tab.

So or they are backtracking like Slack did a couple of weeks ago and will seek a way to still do this when no-one is looking, or they are obfuscating their true intentions with blah, or they will just keep users in the dark and lie. If anyone believes Adobe is not going to take their work and still make them pay for an extortionate license, send them my way, as I have a bridge to sell them.

Edit: Video proving that what you are saying is not correct: tube.kockatoo.org/w/g9p72nNRHi6bArN4ABtSQM I think that what you are calling “KDE” may be “Plasma”, since you are comparing with another desktop environment. To answer your question, yes, and the process started some years ago. It sounds like you may be a bit out of the loop, as Plasma now weighs more or less the same as XFCE, or thereabouts (these things are harder to measure than one may assume). I personally installed Plasma 6 on a Dell XPS PP25L from 2008 and it works flawlessly.

I’m afraid you are definitely out of the loop: Plasma is the DE. That is what it’s called: Plasma, not KDE. KDE refers to the organisation, the community and all the software the community produces, which includes Plasma (the DE), but also all the apps, frameworks, widgets, etc. I find it a bit ironic for KDE to be pushing this message, when it’s a heavy DE (relatively speaking) You didn’t seem to read my message. Allow me to repeat the gist here: Plasma (the DE) works fluidly on a machine bought in 2008 which comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo running at 1.8GHz. This machine has an onboard Intel GMA X3100 GPU and 2GB Memory. I doubt a heavy/bloated environment like you are imagining would even be able to display the log in screen on that. I would advise you stop repeating third-hand FUD, as it is not true, and you tried the software out for yourself. I am sure you will be surprised at how light Plasma (the DE) is.

I made you a video. I’m taking about KDE the project. No you are not. Or you weren’t. Allow me to quote your own post: I’m talking about the “DE” part of KDE in general; As the DE is Plasma, that is the part I am addressing. Now you are moving the goalposts. That said, I do not know what you mean when you refer to “the KDE project”, as KDE encompasses many projects. In any case, I don’t doubt that KDE can’t run at all under the specs you mentioned So you don’t doubt it is light. Of course if we pile on a bunch of apps, like we could throw in Blender open 50 times rendering 4K animations and I’m sure it will make the laptop run slow. But that would be because of Blender, not the DE. However, for the sake of argument, I did try the three examples you quoted, Dolphin, Konsole and Kate, and as you can see in the aforementioned video, they are all also very light and worked perfectly simultaneously on the 2008 machine. I do not have Konqueror installed on that machine, as it is not considered an essential part of Plasma anymore and is not widely used.

You are moving the goalpost once again. First to be light the DE (i.e. Plasma) had to be light; then the DE had to be light, but not Plasma (?), but your redefinition of DE as in Plasma, plus a random set of apps (Dolphin, Konsole and Kate – none of which are distributed with Plasma, by the way). As that also proved to be light, now you are basing your argument on (a) a poll (?) and (b) that there is at least one desktop that is lighter and that does not need swap. I am perfectly willing to admit the latter, mainly because it is true: there ARE DEs lighter than Plasma. But it is a strawman argument, as admitting that does not invalidate the statement that “Plasma is light” and “KDE’S software is not bloated”. I wish you would stick to one thing and argue in good faith. You seem incapable of that so, I’m done.

Elementary has the same problem with its mail app. Because the problem is Google not wanting third party apps accessing their service. Edit: In other news, I just tried it and GMail works just fine with KMail. Setting up is a three step process and automatic most of the way.

Haven’t heard this one before, but it sounds like a trip to bugs.kde.org to me. Check if it hasn’t been reported. Maybe also check on Fedora, as it may be something going on there. Thanks for your help!

It is not perfect, of course! It also does not have the resources of Blender. Then again, both pieces of software are quite different and have different uses.

Be advised that FreeCAD, much like Blender, is in no way easy to use! It is software for doing engineering and architecture stuff. These thing are not simple. FreeCAD’s learning curve is steep. The good news is that there are more and more tutorials online (and many are follow-along videos) that can help get you started.

Very hard to say for me. I did use AutoCAD, but it was years ago. I’m talking more than two decades (AutoCAD was first released in the early 80s), so impossible to judge the current state of the software now. I can say FreeCAD is good for 3D printing stuff. I also like OpenSCAD, a 3D scripting language. I wrote a 4 part tutorial series that takes you from designing to printing and covered both FreeCAD and OpenSCAD from a beginner’s perspective, if you are interested: Part 1: OpenSCAD Part 2: More OpenSCAD Part 3: FreeCAD Part 4: Slicing and printing

I agree! Nevertheless I am still astounded at the progress FreeCAD has made in the last… What? Four ~ five years? It has gone from “barely usable” and “lacking in even basic features” to “woah! You can make that with FreeCAD?”. Also, the community and third party support and contributions have also exploded. This is vital for the survival of a project like this.
