"When I question whether AI can ever be ethical or feminist (...) it doesn’t come from cynicism for the sake of it, but from years of watching patterns repeat. The promises to do better, the carefully crafted language of responsibility, the performance of listening, none of it has meaningfully shifted how these systems are built or who they serve."

New piece by Hija Kamran, part of the series "Don't ask AI, ask a peer," an initiative by APC, GenderIT and Global Voices.

What happens when we stop asking AI, and start asking each other again?
In this new series, Don't Ask AI, Ask A Peer (a collaboration between APC, GenderIT and Global Voices), writers and illustrators from different contexts respond to shared questions on AI, creativity, and human rights, not with one answer, but many.

Follow the series across April, and join the conversation.

Editorial: Don’t ask AI, ask a peer

This editorial was co-written by three editors, representing three different voices and writing styles, which we have not edited. It only went through a copy-editing process for punctuation and spelling corrections. This is a deliberate decision to highlight human creativity and diversity, which is the core idea of this series. As editors of communication platforms dedicated to safeguarding human rights and amplifying marginalised voices and narratives, in recent years we have faced a dilemma: h

Global aid in crisis: Can we find sustainability in a precarious funding climate?

The funding landscape as we know it has changed quickly, creating a climate of uncertainty for many civil society organisations and social movements. The ongoing dynamics risk fracturing movements, turning groups against one another in competition for resources and undermining their collective power. The role of Big Tech in deepening the crisis – through unprecedented concentration of power and the amplification of disinformation – places organisations defending digital rights, such as those wit

India’s race to adopt AI sparks a deeper question: How can technology respect human rights? “Responsible AI” without accountability is merely an aspiration. Although the framework talks about a people-first approach, human rights must be the starting point of AI governance, not a consideration to be layered on afterwards.

But the rapid spread of digital tools has created new avenues for violence and marginalisation.
