#USA #US The simple truth is, the climate accountability genie is out of the bottle, and the Supreme Court is unlikely to jam it back in. Even if the court sides with Suncor, attribution science will continue to move forward, filling in the gaps between cause and effect in our understanding of how climate works It is only a matter of time before the courts catch up https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/06/opinion/oil-companies-supreme-court.html https://archive.ph/weZuu#selection-4447.0-4447.303 #ClimateChange #UpheavalClimate #pollution #ecology #environment #climate

hm, i thought KDE was trying to make up for platforming the nazi. lots of people today saying "let's give KDE a chance!" nope, they're now doubling down further. this post is a study in the art of nazi apologetics in online discourse - removing the content of the issue and leaving only a description phrased to sound innocent. what happened is that the straight-up nazi was posting, someone identified that this person was a straight-up nazi, the nazi admitted they were that nazi, then KDE banned the person calling out the nazi and kept the nazi the social media person sympathising here with the nazi tries to claim that calling out the nazi is equivalent to real world violence. https://archive.ph/dPms4#selection-1304.0-1304.1

A record-breaking El Niño in the Pacific Ocean has created harsh winds that have swept into the Atlantic, preventing storms from growing. Dry air, occasionally coinciding with dust from Africa’s Sahara Desert, has choked off storms from the moisture they require to become more powerful If the upper troposphere warms faster than the air below, the atmosphere becomes more stable because the temperature difference between the lower and upper atmosphere shrinks https://archive.ph/LZn1X#selection-477.0-489.106 #climate

"Playing on the opponents' ground always leads to defeat" - https://archive.is/20260910182226/https://www.lemonde.fr/en/politics/article/2026/09/10/macron-and-merz-two-losing-strategies-against-the-far-right_6757396_5.html#selection-3523.27-3523.32 Lemonde analysis of how Renzi's attempt to combat the far right in Italy ended up paving the way for Meloni - but that didn't stop Starmer, Macron, then Merz all repeating the same mistake. Just stupidity ? Or were these apparent centrists themselves infected by far-right ideology ?

"People working at the frontier may know more than most about what today’s models can do. But that does not give them special knowledge of what machines that do not yet exist will someday become ... Scripture warns against false prophets. The Gospel of Matthew says that no one but God, “not even the angels of heaven,” knows the day or the hour of the end times. That’s worth remembering amid the flood of predictions about an AI apocalypse." What balderdash! https://archive.ph/ts2LJ#selection-527.149-531.34 2/n

"People said they lived better during the Soviet era, that they felt more valued" - https://archive.is/20260905161322/https://www.lemonde.fr/en/international/article/2026/09/05/in-germany-memories-of-the-soviet-legacy-are-at-the-heart-of-saxony-anhalt-s-state-election-i-do-not-consider-russians-to-be-enemies_6757193_4.html#selection-3657.208-3661.95 - interesting article exploring the cultural and geopolitical drivers of today's likely far-right election win in former East Germany. If only we could see the rival communist and capitalist systems objectively, rather than through one or the other distorting lens. Many times, working in Eastern European countries, including Russia, in the 90s and 00s, I would hear people complain about soviet life - but immediately follow that up with 'but at least you knew your children would be well educated, treated if they were ill, get a job and a home, however humble, when they left you...' I remember a big group of easterners and westerners talking about television. Somebody from Albania reminisced how in the communist period they had only one channel, and most of an evening might be taken up by a broadcast of a classical music concert. Everybody laughed at the deprivation - then somebody said 'but you know we were all together - the next day you would talk and joke with all your friends about the programmes you had all seen... there was more of a community feeling'. And I remember most clearly the verdict of a Berlin taxi-driver: "Yeah, communism was shit. Capitalism - more shit."

The political centre in the western world is confronted by its own trolley problem. It must choose between letting democracy hurtle down the extreme right route, harming most people, or throwing the switch to the left, damaging the interests of the wealthy and privileged. It is refusing to choose - dreaming instead of a third way that cannot, in principle, exist.

'With France seeking profound change, momentum lies only with candidates who promise to upend the status quo' - Lemonde article on French politics, but describing the whole dilemma of western centrists.

It even enumerates, accurately, why voters are seeking profound change - stagnation or decline in living standards declining social mobility declining quality of public services failure to respond adequately to either the causes or effects of climate-ecological breakdown

  • but bizarrely still focuses - as do mainstream political commentators everywhere - on the shortcomings of centrist political parties and personalities, rather than the simple, obvious fact that there are no non-radical solutions to this polycrisis - that no centrist candidate, however charismatic, has anything to offer.

"From Paris, it seems like a mystery. How could the US, which has set the pace for global science for nearly a century, systematically dismantle its dominant position – and, above all, why?" https://archive.is/20260902070050/https://www.lemonde.fr/en/opinion/article/2026/09/02/trump-takes-aim-at-american-science-as-china-pulls-ahead_6757069_23.html#selection-3513.216-3513.507 "China now outcompetes the US in numerous scientific fields. Since 2019, it has led the world in patent filings and, since 2023, it has topped the Nature Index for scientific publications and continues to widen the gap. In 2024, it also surpassed the US in research and development spending."

"Six nuclear reactors were shut down on Thursday, August 13, due to the ongoing heatwave." - https://archive.is/4t4kH#selection-3347.1-3347.89 I think it's now clear that France must move away from nuclear power. It has saved a lot of fossil fuels emissions to date - but now, given the increasing pace of progress in renewables and battery technology, and climate-ecological breakdown rendering existing nuclear installations inoperable, France must take the strategic turn to renewable energy only.

#health #Louisiana #Florida #USA #US Flesh-Eating Bacteria Kills 5 in Louisiana Vibrio vulnificus, which thrives in warm, brackish water, has also killed 2 people in Florida this year Vibrio are more common from May through October, when seawater tends to be warmer. In recent years, however, outbreaks have occurred in places once thought to be too cold to support the bacteria, such as Long Island Sound, in part due to climate change https://archive.ph/mlqCH#selection-8247.0-8269.128 #ClimateChange #pollution #climate

#FirstNations #Ontario #canada Scientists have long predicted higher temperatures and long-term disrupted weather patterns in general. They predicted this since the 1970s. The cause of this climate change is the production and burning of fossil fuels, thus loading the atmosphere with carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. These gases trap heat, preventing it from radiating out into space, and cause the temperature increases of which Harris speaks https://archive.ph/DjvlX#selection-4949.0-4955.423 #ClimateChange
