Protests in Syria against fuel price increases: blocked roads and burning tires - video
Protests continue for the second day in Syria against fuel price increases, with road blockades and burning tires in several regions. This is reported by Damascus media and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, according to which demonstrations are mainly focused on the north-eastern regions of Raqqa, Hasake and Deir ez-Zor, where protesters have also blocked oil trucks heading to oil fields. Marches have also been reported in Aleppo, Idlib and Hama, in central and western Syria. The increase, in effect since Sunday, has raised diesel from 125 to 175 Syrian pounds per liter (+40%) and gasoline from 152 to 195 Syrian pounds (+28%). The Ministry of Energy has attributed the measure, described as “temporary,” to maintenance at the Banias refinery, on the Mediterranean coast, which had been shut down for about two months, and to rising supply costs on international markets. Syria imports over 60% of its diesel consumption and a third of its gasoline consumption. According to local economists, the increase risks fueling widespread inflation in transport, agriculture and food products, pushing large parts of the population below poverty thresholds.
