Golden Monkey Cercopithecus mitis kandti Palm Oil Detectives

In the mist-laden bamboo forests of the Virunga massif, the golden monkey Cercopithecus mitis kandti darts through dappled sunlight and the tree canopy. This endangered primate is found only in the high-altitude forests of the Albertine Rift, nestled deeply in volcanic mountains. They are found in four national parks: Mgahinga, in south-west Uganda; Volcanoes, in north-west #Rwanda; and Virunga and Kahuzi-Biéga, in the eastern Democratic Republic of #Congo. Like many other animals in the region

The early threat to cocoa production expected to get worse | CBC Climate Change News

As West African cocoa farmers feel the pain of drought, aging trees and competition for farmland, new research out of Harvard says extreme rain is an under-appreciated danger — often hammering flowering trees and younger pods.

xMiss Waldron’s Red Colobus, a secretive old world primate sport chestnut, black, and white white fur that surrounds their expressive faces. They live in the dense canopies of West Africa’s dwindling forests. Their story is one of ever-increasing fragility, on the edge of survival. Sightings of these magnificent primates have faded away since 1978. The last evidence, a skin, emerged in 2002. These monkey species have been driven towards the extinction by palm oil, cocoa, and rubber plantations

Forests in Liberia are falling to cocoa, in half a year the EU could ban imports

On this week’s episode of the Mongabay Newscast, we speak with features writer Ashoka Mukpo, who traveled to southeastern Liberia to investigate what satellite images indicated was a spike in deforestation over a relatively concentrated period. Along with video production coordinator Juan Maza, Mukpo documented illegal cacao plantations in the rainforests in the county of […]

As demand for cocoa grows, forests in Liberia are being cleared at an alarming rate. Between 2024 and 2025, one county alone lost an area of primary forest more than four times the size of Manhattan. To know more we traveled to Kwa National Forest, one of West Africa's last remaining primary forests, to investigate the environmental cost of the cocoa boom. The vanishing forests on Liberia’s cocoa frontier

(GRAND GEDEH, Liberia) – Off in the woods beyond the ekki trees, a sharp crack cuts through the buzzing of insects. “It’s a tree falling,” says George Bowey, a baby-faced community eco-guard who works here in the proposed Kwa National Park, a thick tropical rainforest in southeastern Liberia. There are different ways to grow cacao. […]

Chimpanzees once helped African rainforests recover from collapse Palm Oil Detectives

Most people probably think that the rainforest of central and west Africa, the second largest in the world, has been around for millions of years. However recent research suggests that it is mostly just 2,000 or so years old. The forest reached roughly its modern state following five centuries of regeneration after it was massively fragmented when the dry season suddenly became longer some 2,500 years ago. Help #chimpanzees to survive and #Boycottpalmoil #Boycott4Wildlife every time you shop

Illegal cocoa plantations are fueling rapid deforestation in Liberia’s rainforests to supply global chocolate demand. Ashoka Mukpo met with rangers, landowners, and migrant workers, to investigate if southeastern Liberia is repeating Côte d'Ivoire’s devastating environmental history.
